Strava + ChatGPT

During the pandemic in 2020, I spent a lot of time getting all my running data into Strava since we all had a lot of time on our hands. I figured once all the data was there I could review and understand my running patterns, but the data just sat there on the Strava platform and nothing happened.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the bright idea to export all of my Strava data and upload the activities.csv file into ChatGPT Plus using the Advanced Data Analysis feature. WOW, my mind was blown. It was like sitting next to a PhD level data scientist who knew everything without all the attitude that usually comes along with that job title.

Below is a screenshot of the initial prompt I gave to ChatGPT. As you can see I didn’t have to give much direction to ChatGPT for what I wanted.

In the above graph if you focus on 2021, you will see it shows 243 activities. That is a combination of my runs and walks. So I decided to tell ChatGPT to only give me the data for my runs…

And there it is…for 2021 the number of activities was 243 but the number of runs was only 69. That was mainly due to the 2nd lockdown where I switched from running to walking. And I have yet been able to get back into the running groove.

Back to ChatGPT and my Strava data, next I asked for my 15 longest runs which would capture all the Mumbai half-marathons that I have run.

The possibilities are endless and this was just with my running data. I’m really looking forward to dumping all my blood test results into ChatGPT and see what trends or analysis it can do.

If you are a Strava user, visit this link to find out how to download your data. Once you download the data, unzip it and then look for the activities.csv file and upload it to ChatGPT and run with it!

AI Integration

As we look ahead to the future, it’s almost a given that most apps will incorporate some form of “ChatGPT” features. Where chatting with your favorite apps will become the new norm, giving us very personalized guidance and support.

With OpenAI’s recent launch of ChatGPT Enterprise has further accelerated this trend, providing companies with a simple set of APIs to seamlessly interact with their users. Imagine a scenario where you can effortlessly chat with your fitness app, receiving personalized insights, workout recommendations, and even real-time motivational messages. By leveraging AI technology, Strava and other apps will be able to offer users a more engaging and interactive experience, enhancing the overall fitness journey.

It’s no surprise that OpenAI is on track to do $1 billion in revenue. Of course, OpenAI is just one player and there are many more coming into the space which means innovation will only increase and give end users a much better user experience.
